No Treasury jobs advice on major programs | Narromine News

The Morrison government’s claim of more than 500,000 jobs being created from two major initiatives was not based on Treasury advice.

The government said its energy security roadmap would create 130,000 jobs by 2030.

As well, its manufacturing plan is being promoted as creating 80,000 direct jobs and 300,000 indirect jobs.

Labor finance spokeswoman Katy Gallagher asked Treasury officials on Monday at a Senate estimates hearing what advice had been given to back up the job projections.

Treasury official Matthew Brine said the figures for the energy plan were produced by the industry department based on advice from consultants.

The committee was told the figure was not used in the federal budget.

Asked about the manufacturing plan, the hearing was again told it was not a figure over which Treasury had any visibility.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann told the committee the industry department had the ability to do its own projections as one of the government’s key economic agencies.

He said it was appropriate the industry department provided the figures.
